Honest John

Had a walk around Centre Vale Park, Todmorden this afternoon. It's a lovely park and contains the statue of John Fielden M.P.
He was one of the 'Great and Good' of Todmorden. Known as 'Honest John' he fought for shorter working hours, promoting the Ten Hours Act also known as the Factories Act 1847.
The Ten Hours Act was made to ensure that women and children only worked up to 10 hours a day in factories. This would now make their maximum schedule 10 hours of work on each weekday, Saturdays 8 hours, and off Sundays. In total, this limited the work time per week to 58 hours.
Those were the 'Good Old Days' :-(
