Why?

A simple 'lick of paint' has turned into this:

Paint dado, skirting and frames as well as stripping dark, orange-tinge stain off the staircase to paint it white to give a fresh and airy feel to the hallway and filling all the little holes in wall.

Why, oh why?! This job will take us 2 weeks rather then the 2 days allocated!!
