H's Tombstone

H. loved birds and cacti.
He was my best friends father, a neighbour and played the trumpet in our brass band.
I went in and out his house on a daily basis as a child and a teen and I always got along great with him.
In my mid-twenties I had to learn he was an alcoholic (and had been one for many, many years already).
He went through a rehab and stayed dry 20 years until he died in 2007 in his mid-seventies. He was very creative after the rehab and I've always been friends with him and his family.
Just sometimes (mostly after talking to his wife and children) I ask myself how I could not have noticed what was going on earlier. And I wasn't the only one.
