Visiting the Beavers

We've been meaning to ski out to the beaver pond as soon as deer hunting season was over, but somehow the weather hasn't cooperated. Until today. Beautiful fresh snow, glittering, like a dream. The small nameless lakes around here are pretty inaccessible (at least for wimps like me) for most of the year, but now we can take advantage of the channel that the beavers made and ski out to their lodge. No sign of the actual beaver (or else I would have blipped it) and the lodge was merely a snow-covered lump. The ground was too rough to get too far into the woods, so we made our way back to the trail and went to investigate the other beaver lodge, the one by the log cabin . Much the same story - lodge covered in snow (although the beavers had made an air hole) but no sign of life. Not even a footprint. So we skied a bit around the lake - funny to be out on the water - and went home. The sun had disappeared and the snow was falling again by the time we got there. Beautiful day in all though - and probably our longest ski trip so far.
