PawsClaws n Tails outWest

Another day at the office

Interesting and sad day at work again. Saturdays seem to be the day of death lately - thankfully I'm changing to Sundays next week!

Firstly a sub adult black swan with a large swelling on her neck - turns out she had a large oesophageal blockage from swallowing a fishing hook. It would have originally had a bunch of line attacked to it and consequently all the grass and plant material are afterwards got stuck with it and couldn't pass. The hook had also punctured her oesophagus and plant matter was free flowing into the subcutaneous tissue. Bloody Fisherman who can't clean up after themselves properly!!!!!!!

Next this beautiful, majestic wedge-tailed eagle that was found out east on someone's property unable to fly. He was very dark indicating he was an older bird. We couldn't feel any fractures which was promising but X-rays sadly revealed an extensive bone tumour which had started eating away at his shoulder.

So we started off the day euthanising a splendid tree frog that wasn't doing well and finished with the eagle :( There was also a sick night heron in there somewhere too ... You win some, but you lose a lot, the reality when treating wildlife :(
