Bird Carving on Pulpit

Today has been a busy day at the Mackintosh Church, with a lot of catching up after the Christmas break.

I managed to take a quick blip, just as the sun made a rare appearance. This photo highlights the beautiful carving on the oak pulpit, it shows a bird embracing and protecting young plant shoots; perhaps echoes of the parable of the sower from St. Matthews Gospel.

It is difficult to know how Charles Rennie Mackintosh "sold" some ideas to the conservative Free Church as the building is infused with decorative carvings of birds, insects and plant forms.
