This Puts Me On The Map.....

This milestone lives in the centre of our village. Looks like it has been repainted recently. I love the fact they show some distances to within 1/4 of a mile, but I suppose in the days of horses that was probably significant.

This stone is situated right in the heart of the village, in the village square. The road itself was originally part of the A1 Great North Road - in places you can hardly squeeze a couple of cars past each other.

There are some great photos in the village archive (from the 1950s and 1960s I think) showing bank holiday traffic snaking its way through the village. So traffic jams are nothing new!

Fortunately the village was bypassed by a dual carriageway in the 1960s. This bypass was bypassed with a 3 lane dual carriageway in the early 1990s and even this was further upgraded in the early 2000s and is now the A1(M).
