Peeping Tom

I mentioned Lady Godiva briefly in yesterday's blip. Well on the outskirts of Coventry is a pub called The Peeping Tom and this story has the two forever linked.
Lady Godiva felt sorry for the people of Coventry, who were suffering due to her husband's excessive taxation. She begged him again and again, but he refused to lower the taxes. At last, fed up with her pleas, he said he would lower the taxes if she would strip naked and ride through the streets of the town on a horse. Lady Godiva took him at his word and issued a proclamation that everyone should stay indoors and shut their windows. She then rode through the town, covering her naked body with just her long hair. However, one person, a tailor named Tom, disobeyed her proclamation. Tom bored a hole in his shutters so that he could watch Lady Godiva pass by naked and as a result he was struck blind. In the end, Lady Godiva's husband kept his word and abolished the excessive taxes. Peeping Tom is now forever linked with voyeurism and this pub sign shows him in his dastardly deed.
If you want to see the previous version of the sign you can find it HERE.
