Flying Boats on the Clyde

Ian Winstanley talking today at Largs Sailing Club on the fascinating history of Flying Boats on the Clyde during World War II.

Largs was an important location and Barrfields Pavilion was requisitioned as a base for Sunderlands and Catalinas. The present Lifeboat slipway was built to bring the flying boats ashore for maintenance.

Churchill and Eisenhower met at Vanduara House on the Largs seafront from where the plans for the D-Day Landings were prepared.

The entire Clyde from the Cumbraes to Helensburgh was a restricted area and a hive of activity as well documented in pictures of the time.
