Chopping ice

After weeks of near-Arctic weather, the temperatures finally warmed up and we went to the other extreme - high winds and a deluge of rain. Today the roads were mostly clear of ice & snow, and the day was sunny and mild.

So we went to clear off my parents' driveway - it was a 200-foot long stretch of ice only a few days ago, but by this afternoon most of the ice was melted away. The ice that remained, though, was thick and stubborn. My partner Janet and I chopped and hacked and shovelled with all the tools we could find, and the ice gradually gave way, and the pavement is clear again. No need for a visit to the gym today!
