Astelia fruits

This plant (Astelia nervosa) is growing in our garden. It was planted some years ago, and now fights it out among other native plants growing around it. The birds have already had a few of the fruits.

Before we planted shrubs and trees on our section we had a different bird fauna. Birds of bush and shrubland have gradually displaced some of those that prefer open ground, like yellowhammers and magpies. Now we get lots of silver eyes, fantails, grey warblers, bellbirds and quail.
