It is remarkable how closely the history of the apple tree is connected with that of man.

In the heart of Ghent, between the branches of the 'Leie', you will find the 'Gravensteen'. For hundreds of years, this moth has succesfully protected the city against enemies of every kind. It's last battle dates from the 16th of november 1949, when University students occupied the castle. The reason for this fight was simple, police-officers were going to change their white helmets for blue hats, making them less distinguishable from postmen. On top of that, the price of a beer would raise with 1 'Franc', an equivalent to 0.025 Euro. They may take our lives, but they'll never raise the price of our beer! At the end of the day, police, gendarmerie and fire fighters were able to take control over the castle, yet the students made their point. A day in history we will never forget.
