A Bridge Too Far

'A Bridge Too Far' as the sandstone Eckington Bridge spanning the River Avon, was for me a couple of days ago!

The staggering rainfall and torrents coming down the rivers meant that the flat land in the surrounding areas of Worcestershire and Gloucestershire was flooded with the water levels having risen dramatically. Water FAR too high to get anywhere near the bridge and to cross, I had to make the much longer journey round to the opposite side of the river. In a rush at the time it certainly seemed a bridge too far! The bridge has only just been opened.

The 1977 epic film tells of the failed attempt to break through the German lines in occupied Netherlands in operation Market Garden during WWII. This unconfirmed quote by Lieutenant-General Frederick Browning played by Dirk Bogarde.

There is also a poem 'Upon Eckington Bridge, River Avon' by AT Quiller-Couch
