Morning sunshine turned to afternoon gloom. Rain threatened as we rambled around the coastal slope. A cock pheasant exploded from a gateway and in the field beyond I saw these and collected them up - do you recognise them for what they were?

These were once considered a useful first aid item, and kept handy by barbers, blacksmiths, gypsies and American Indians. The cloud of dusky powder produced by a little tap (hence their old name 'wolf fart') acted as a coagulant for minor wounds, nose bleeds and burns.
