Sandon Beach

Overcast and a bit stormy today but at least it was nice and cool after the heat of the last week or so. Our friends are still in town so we took them into Maclean this morning for coffee and scones, then a drive around Maclean. They were suprised to see it was much bigger than they had expected, from there we went to Gulmarrad and then on to Brooms Head where we had burgers (us) and fish and chips (friends) on the beach. From there we drove on the winding dirt road to Sandon Camping area in the Yuraygir National Park, a lovely natural habitat with the river and beach. We then pulled into Lake Arragan and the beautiful beaches there for a look around. Unfortunately it started to rain so we didn't stay long there. Before heading home we took them for a drive around Palmers Island and pulled up on the river bank for a look see where I saw the biggest fish tail I have ever seen break the water . I swear it was about 1 mtr wide- possibly a big Jew fish apparently. I think they really enjoyed the day and couldn't get over the number of different areas and surrounding hidden beaches that dot the coast line.
My day was also made when I spotted the Brumby just off the side of the road on the way to Sandon. He is believed to be the last of the wild Brumbies that have roamed the area for generations. About 10 years ago most of them were killed by the bushfires that went through the area and in 2012 the remainder (except one stallion that could not be caught) were rounded up by NPWS, as they consider them to be detrimental to the conservation of the National Park flora and fauna.
