Sun Dogs over York University

A rare winter treat appeared over York University in Toronto: sun dogs - the sun refracted by the ice crystals in the atmosphere. They are a beautiful atmospheric phenomena. This was taken around 3pm. If it lasts, it will be more dramatic towards sunset. In this shot, you can see rainbow refractions inside and light beams emanating from each dog; and you can see a very faint circle joining them.

I took some shots indoors but went outside to the Common and used a convex parabolic traffic mirror in the bus loop to block out the sun and provide better contrast for the sun dogs. It's been many years since I've seen a nice twin set like these. Cool!
