Dance Me to the End of Love- Vettriano

This afternoon we went to see the Jack Vettriano exhibition in Glasgow- with an open mind.

You either love his work or hate it.

The art establishment have given him the thumbs down for years but now Kelvingrove art gallery have hosted a retrospective of 20 years of his work.

This self-taught artist from a mining family in Fife work now sells from £48,000 o £195,000 each.

The public love him. The work is fun, light and accessible. All words that are an anathema to the “serious artist and critic”.

We had to queue to get in, queue to join the slow moving throng as it moved from gallery to gallery. It is years since I have been to an exhibition so popular with such a cross section of the public.

Already nearly 100,000 have visited it (paying £6 per person- do the calculations) and it’s got a few more weeks to run.

Did I like it? Well, yes the work was much better in real life than I had been led to believe from other artists and from prints I had seen.

Vettriano has hit the jackpot. And he’s got an OBE to prove it.
