Deserted?

Desert in the northern Africa, hot, barren, isolated, dangerous, roadless, uninhabited and
of little value right?
Until this spring as 400 million Euro was invested by ABB,Siemens, Deutsche Bank and several other companies for a n exciting project. A hydro power plant to produce electricity from the sun in a medium size park called Desertec. These parks exist in Spain but with rising oil prices huge parks the size of Germany may in 40+ years cover the needs of this huge region and provide for 15 % of the total need for electricity in Europe.

The former colonies may build energy intensive industry as well as large industrial greenhouse production facilities with desalinated water. Then shipping it on submerged hispeed-railtransport underneath the desert sand to the mediterranean coast

All fully possible with the free"unlimited supply of sun and hydroelectric power.Just say increase, increase and increase again!

With the exception of hydropower, natural flows of energy are not widely used for power generation today, because they are not as easily stored and exploited as fossil or nuclear fuels. Some of them can be stored with a reasonable technical effort for a limited time-span, but others must be taken as provided by nature. The challenge of future electricity supply is to find a mix of available technologies and resources that is capable of satisfying not only the criterion of ?power on demand?, but all the other criteria for sustainability too.
