Treading The Boards

It’s the 19th century
and there’s Fletcher,
down-at-heel lawyer,
who failed

night after night after night
after night after night after
night after night after night
after night after night

(ten nights in all)

to get the villain,
Snowdon Dunhill,
off the hook.

(Transportation was the punishment
for the crime of stealing corn.)

But some nights, in spite
of what was written down
in black and white,
I felt we could win.

Alas, poor Fletcher
(dishevelled lawyer,
amateur actor)
I knew him well.

That Was Me
