The Stoke

Surprisingly, awoke at 7am, straight onto local time. Perfect. What jet lag!

The kids, not so much. I woke them up at 8, and encouraged them into the pool. We had to get the hydroslide turned on, but by 8.30ish, they were sliding, and doing laps. Perfect way to get going! Yeah, what hotel has an indoor pool and hydroslide. Radisson Calgary … the bar has been raised!

A quick breakfast and then off to a local outlet mall to look for some boots and clothes for the kids. No luck at all. Despite being minus 16, yes, minus 16!, outside, they are moving into spring gear. Crazy!

So, off we set at 12.30 for Revelstoke, 420km, and around 4.5 hrs.

Have to say. Calgary was disorienting, had no sense of direction, but after 30 mins or so we saw the mountains. The very BIG mountains! And the we spent the next 4 hours driving through them, basically, amazing (!) scenery and a pretty easy drive. For lane into the mountains, and then an 2 or 3 lane thereafter. But, a little trickier in snowy conditions. However, traffic wasn’t heavy so all was OK. Surprised however that this isn’t a very populated area. For vast portions, u to 15km or more, there is no food or fuel. And in bad weather the 4.5 hour drive could be much much longer I’d imagine.

And then we arrived in Revelstoke. It ant Aspen, was my initial impression. This is a resort that was built basically 7 years ago. Or at least the base area and 4 main lifts. We’re staying at Sutton Place, at the bottom of the mountain.. Super nice, but 2 bars and 1 restaurant are the choices, or it’s a15 minute ride into town.

So far OK, and the bar was great. But it’s definitely not as developed as many resort, which might be nice …

Tomorrow looks nice, we’ll no doubt get a good look at the hill. The largest vertical in North America the marketing says ...
