Ice-pocalypse

Although it is usually hot and humid in Mississippi, it can get cold here in the winter. Just take a look at the water that froze in this fountain. The ice formation is almost reminiscent of something sculptor and photographer Andy Goldsworthy would create in his film Rivers and Tides. Aside from viewing this picture as a piece of art, there is some important logic that we as designers must take away from this incident: concrete footings must be placed below frost depth, exposed pipes must be insulated, and any pool of water should have a filter running continuously to keep ice from forming. Also, make sure walking surfaces have adequate drainage to prevent puddles from forming.
