It Involves Walking

It involved stepping out
from the warmth
into the cool air,
into the built up area.

Cars, busses, trams. Lights.
Noise. People. Of course, people.
Millions of them. Whizz! Whizz! Whizz!
It must be rush hour!

Then more walking.
On and on,
following the straight road.

No bends.
No choices.
No decisions needing to be made.

Just the act
of placing one foot in front of the other
was all that was required
to make the people and the traffic
disappear

and for the buildings
to become fewer,
smaller.

I don’t know whether
you’ve ever harboured the idea
that the road might,
eventually, run out?

You did look, do look,
with your hood pulled up,
as if you can, and will,
keep going,
for ever.

Walk on...
