Stevie-boy Doolan & Buster

Haworth. West yorks. UK.

It was uplifting to come across Stevie-Boy Doolan and Buster (Buster is the dog) opposite the church in Haworth after I'd looked round the graveyard there. He was very friendly but I didn't want to break up his routine which was in full swing.

-----------------------------

The graveyard at the church is huge and very crowded with internees. There are many gravestones laid flat on the ground which I heard was a custom of Quakers as they considered upright stones too ostentatious. There are many, many stones recording the deaths of babies and young infants as well as many young adults.

Apparently the average age of death in the 1850s was 28! Haworth had some particular problems with water run-off carrying infection from graves and sewers as well as the ubiquitous TB infections.

Haworth is a fascinating place to walk around and explore.
