ERSKINE Proud to care

Ex RAF man Joe Martin from East Kilbride gave an inspiring address to The Rotary Club of Strathaven tonight on the work of Erskine Hospital for Scotland's veterans.

After 17 years in the RAF, supporting Erskine is Joe's way of "giving something back"

Many members although familiar with the work of Erskine were unaware that it was a multi-location organisation with a facilities spread across the country.

As a charity it receives no direct government support.

Erskine cares for 1,400 people at a cost of £144,000 per week.

In describing some of the characters among the veterans, Joe conveyed a strong sense of community and self help which helped bond the wide range of ages in care. The youngest is only 21 the oldest 102 years.
