Mossy log

On the north-facing slopes and in shaded valleys in the nature reserve mosses are in their element. At this time of the year they look wonderfully fresh and bright against the dull greys and browns making up the rest of the scene. 50-60 years ago basketfulls of moss were gathered here and sent to Covent Garden by rail for use by florists. Thankfully, there is no longer disturbance on that scale.
