Church at Marchésieux, Lower Normandy

This is typical of the old churches which will be found in many smaller towns in the Département of La Manche.

Its tower is almost certainly 11th century, some of the windows at ground floor level must have been modified later. The building has more the air of a fortification than of a church; the bell tower clearly served a dual purpose.

Marchésieux is a charming town which specialises in basketry. It has an excellent museum of local life and agriculture - "la Maison des Marais" - based in a large, thatched 18th century farmhouse.

(My apologies, as my detailed information on the church is on the other side of the Channel.)
