An Army Grave

In Loving Memory Of
Johanna,
The Dearly Beloved Daughter
Of Charlotte Hiesley,
Who Was Promoted
To Her Heavenly Mansion 18th
January 1898, Aged 24 Years.

Old Scottish gravestones from the 18th and 19th Centuries are often decorated with symbols of the trade, profession or interests of the deceased.

This rather ruinous monument in the ancient St Peter's graveyard in Peterhead marks the grave of Johanna Hiesley, a young member of the Salvation Army who died in 1898. The monument is decorated with Johanna's Salvation Army bonnet and, to the left, her tambourine, now badly damaged.
