Carry On

... Up The Panama Canal

Another day, another item ticked off my bucket list. 100 years young this year, the Panama Canal is an engineering marvel. 48 miles long, it links the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean via 3 locks. The French gave up trying to build it in the late 19th century as it was making them sick (literally!), and the US completed the job.

I won't bore you with facts and figures but see that wee ship in the background? It is actually a beast of a chemical tanker, and is the widest vessel that this lock can accommodate. We were just glad its brakes worked!
