Grumpy Old Man

Our conservatory

I ventured down to the garden today for the first time since my new hip was put in two weeks ago - though I did take two sticks as a precaution! A cold day, got caught in the rain, but what can you expect of the Argyll coast in February! In the background you can glimpse the sea through the trees - this is Asknish Bay.

This is our Alitex conservatory, which replaced an ancient structure back in the mid-1990s. Inside it we grow plants which are similar in style to those in the garden, but a touch less hardy, such as tender ferns, sub-tropical rhododendrons and other shrubs which need protection from frost. We keep the temperature a few degrees above freezing, but no more.

This year we're planning some more interpretive panels in here to tell visitors more about our plant collection.
