New Year, New Life

If the lions drink...

...London will sink.
If it reaches their manes we're all down the drains.
If the water is sucked we're all (clearly in a lot of trouble).

It is said, possibly an urban myth, that these lion mooring rings that line each side of the Embankment were an early form of flood warning and that policemen walking along the Embankment would check them to see if there was any danger. Of course, we have more sophisticated flood warning methods now and the Thames Barrier protects London from flooding but the Embankment was breached in 1928 as described in this BBC Magazine article. It's interesting to see that, even back then, questions about dredging and whether local or national government should take responsibility were raised. So nothing much seems to have changed...

It was such a beautiful day - sunny with blue sky. I had to get out and make the most of it even though I really needed to be preparing for the decorators who are arriving in the morning to paint the landing after the crack repair.
I walked from Westminster to St Paul's and took loads of photos. But even before I started I'd planned to blip this lion today as it seemed so appropriate with all the flooding that the country has been suffering at the moment. Hopefully the worst is over now but I see more rain is forecast again next week.
