obviously never thrown away

I had wondered if one day I might have enough spare links of chains to be able to make an entirely new one, but the need to restore a couple to fit the current longer-stayed arrangement thwarts such plans. Hopefully the slight difference in wear between these two links and the rest of the chain will pass unnoticed.
