Deforestation

When I first approached Mzuzu in November of 2005, I was seriously impressed by the vast forest areas on the last twenty miles of our trip, which I?m informed was part of the biggest man made forest in Africa. Now with amazing speed, vast areas have been cut and devastated, with only minimal replacement.
The management of this surgery looks poor to me, with poor extraction methods, leaving large quantities of offcuts behind, which would be sawn into useful sections elsewhere.
I never know if fires like this are deliberate or accidental, but the occur regularly with huge negative impacts on environment and ecosystems.
