This kind of trap is the kind that some criminals use to kill birds of prey, they place them on poles, and when a buzzard, goshawk, sparrowhawk or red kite lands on them it goes off and breaks (or may even sever) the bird's legs. As the chain is attached to the pole, the bird may kill itself by struggling. It is a truly ghastly way to kill anything.

Locally we had a case of a gamekeeper setting a trap like this on top of a pole, in court his defence was that it was set to catch squirrels. He was fined £250.
