Ancient Greece, or Gladiatorial Rome? It is still re-enacted, not least with the 6 Nations rugby at the moment. Wales are back on track !! and England have set the contest up nicely by beating Ireland. All good stuff, and great entertainment. New age gladiatorial combat for the masses.

The pic was taken at Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland. There are a couple of these statues here and well worth a visit (but being renovated still).
