Rosette Thistle

This close up of a large rosette thistle of 30cm in diameter took my eye this morning. The close up shows the egg shaped barbs near the central crown of the plant. It is said that the Romans used to dig these up and throw them under the horses hooves of their enemy, because the barbs of these thistles would unsettle the horses and their riders.
