The Best Time

It doesn’t matter what the clock says
(it’s been stuck at roughly ten to four
for as long as anyone can remember)
his time is now.

All the seconds minutes hours days
weeks months years that have passed
have brought him to this: to the place
he wants to be and sitting opposite
(they have no problem choosing where to sit)
the person he wants to be with.

Life is good. And there’s more to come: roast beef,
Yorkshire pud, mashed potatoes roast potatoes,
carrots, broccoli, peas and, of course, horse-
radish sauce. Add a couple of glasses of red wine
into the mix and everything’s fine.

Though some rhubarb crumble and custard to finish
off wouldn’t go amiss.
