Walk to Culbone

The walk to Culbone through the woods from Porlock Weir is one of our favourite walks so it seemed the choice for our anniversary. I was torn between this photo and one of the rolling hills of Exmoor but this won.
Culbone is a hamlet only reachable by foot and four by fours which use the track for the occasional service. It is a very beautiful place and full of peace. Years ago I made friends with the couple living in the Lodge overlooking the bridge there and there is one more cottage in the valley.
Many legends are linked with Culbone as well as a distinguished potter Waistell Cooper who lived in the lodge with his Californian wife Joan Cooper. She taught and wrote books about the spiritual uniqueness of Culbone and after her death a Trust was set up, of which I am the secretary, to publish her books and to try to ensure that Culbone remains a place where people can go to relax and find some space from the pressures of modern life. Her books can be bought from the Trust or from the information centre in Porlock.
