Stonehouse, Lanarkshire.

The Village Square where once stood tenements and shops.

A fish shop, a sweet shop and a butchers made up the block with many families housed above and adjacent. A hive of activity and close family relationships, doors were never locked and if anything happened everyone knew who did it.

Behind the dwelling houses were wash-houses and a drying green, where women did the family wash while transacting the local news.

Ian Taylor pictured, is a Stonehouse native whose family occupied one of the houses on the site. Today Ian was returning to work after lunch and willingly agreed to be photographed.
