The German Connection to Sugar in Greenock

Over on our Twitter feed @AbsentVoices, we've been enjoying all the information flowing to and fro on the subject of Greenock's once mighty sugar industry.
Yesterday, Ross Ahfield (@Zuckerbeckers) posted this link on our Twitter feed and it's opened up another huge strand of the story of sugar in Greenock.
Germans were undisputed masters of the Sugar Trade and most of the warehouses in Greenock were built by Germans. By 1900 there were over 800 ethnic Germans in Greenock and their DNA lives on in descendants with names like Ahfield.
It's a fascinating blog if you have time to take a look.

Absent Voices artist, Alec Galloway, has been in touch with Ross so no doubt this strand of the sugar story will weave its way into telling the story of sugar in Greenock.
