Skibbereen

A visit to Clonakilty and then Skibbereen on various errands.

Skibbereen has a long and sometimes dark history but is a vibrant town, full of colour and interesting backwaters, although it is looking a little economically down at heel these days with many empty premises.

These steps descend from Bridge Street into a small inlet leading to 'Long Quay' on the river Ilen that links the town to the sea and I assume they were once used to port goods into the town.

Sinead O'Connor - Skibbereen captures one of the darkest periods in Irish history.
