Cheoung Ek Killing Fields

In one of the sites where the Khmer Rouge killed many. Many babies was supposedly killed by smashing them against this tree. Next to this tree (unseen) is a big pit (one of many mass graves in the area) where the remains of many women and babies were dug up.

Walking along the paths in this area, many bone fragments (e.g. teeth) and old rags can be found which formerly belonged to those killed. Apparently one of the staff usually collects the bones found (and newly uncovered by rain) on the paths next to this tree. If you look closely you can see some teeth placed on top of the bricks.

I was also surprised to find that the site has been privatised - the local government supposedly sold the site to a Japanese organisation so unfortunately no proceeds from visitors goes back to the Cambodian victims.
