tell tale signs

Our morning walk pals...humans and hounds that is...include J, founder of Kanyana the wildlife rehab hospital where I volunteer.
This morning was a gentle lesson in gum nut noshers and how to tell what parrots are in the vicinity by the marks they leave on the nuts.

Red Cap parrots leave delicate little crescent moon marks formed by the lower beak as the hooked upper beak scoops out the seeds.
The Red Tailed Black Cockatoos leave a deeper gash and gnaw away at the nut to hoick out the seeds in a much less delicate fashion!

Walk and wonderful insights into the wildlife around...what a way to start the day.
