Surprised I can see stars

Maybe it's the dry desert air that makes the visibility good. I'm in the middle of the sixth largest city in the U.S. How can I see a decent number of stars here?

It'll be way better if I ever get out of this city at night. When I visit my hometown, it'll be fantastic seeing stars.
