Vinou

This is the view from the Vinou trail looking down the steep limestone cliffs towards the village of Panagia on the right. One of its claims to fame is the birthplace of Archbishop Makarios of whom the Greek Cypriots are very proud, especially for his leadership in helping Cyprus to become independent in 1959. We visited his very humble birthplace which consists of two rooms with a bare earth floor while the sheep were kept in the back room and had to walk through the family’s room to get in and out.
At the foot of these cliffs which fell down in an earthquake can be seen some newly planted vines which, with other vineyards in the area, contribute to wine which is considered to be the best in Cyprus.
The distant half full Kannavou Dam was being well stocked up with the very welcome "Gold Rain" that day and we were being thanked for bringing rain!
