Under a lowering sky

We arrived at the national park to find it closed after over 270mm of rain fell in one night ... That's a year's worth of rainfall in this part of South Africa! The roads are out, the hotel swimming pool is full of mud and there won't be any game drives until at least tomorrow evening. Not good news for those of us who are only here for two days!

This is the view from the Kwa Maritane Lodge - the park is formed of concentric rings of rocky ridges - it started life as a huge volcano complex in the dim and distant past. We've already seen gazelle, warthogs and dozens of brightly coloured bird species, just from the hotel :-)
