Life in a Northern Town

Industrial

I've posted lots of photographs of Huddersfield looking pretty, so today I thought I'd post a reminder of its industrial heritage.

Here is the Broad Canal, lifeline of the textile industry that Huddersfield grew rich on, and which has all but disappeared nowadays. The elaborate mechanism to lift the bridge was operated by a windlass winch, but is now electric. You can see Castle Hill in the distance and a dark satanic mill looming over the canal.

Today we are off for a meal for my birthday (which isn't today) and that's about it - apart from the ironing of course. Maybe pigs will fly and someone else will do it!
