Retirement in Montana

Pete the grizzly bear

Today we went to get our permit to cut down our Christmas tree in the forest. This is what greets you when you walk into the Troy Ranger Station. The following is a write-up in a brochure.

Pete was 11 years old in 1999 when he developed a taste for domestic goats, food from outdoor freezers, garbage from dumpsters and an elk. Pete's repeated incidents with livestock and attempts to obtain food from residences resulted in an unacceptable risk to human safety. A decision was made to remove the animal. There were no opportunities for relocation within the recovery zone of a bear with this type of behavior that provided a large home range. At the time of death, he weighed 600+ pounds.
