Esculent

es·cu·lent
[es-kyuh-luhnt]
adjective
1. suitable for use as food; edible.

noun
2. something edible, especially a vegetable.

No doubt you or I would find the whole idea of chomping down on a pile of hay for lunch not very esculent at all. However, my equine pal Rubicon thoroughly enjoys such a repast, as you can readily see here.

Rubicon belongs to my good friend Sarah. She keeps him and his best buddy Buttonwood - a retired racehorse - here on my farm, and I really love to see them out in the fields. On Christmas Eve, I always leave a gift bag filled with esculent apples, carrots, and peppermints outside their stable doors.
