Pigs, pictures and a lady

We've all seen things drawn on the walls of public toilets but not many of them look like this.

It's part of a mural on an outside wall of one of the several public toilets in Grange. This is one of the few spaces on which the 'city fathers' invite free artistic expression, and the result, as you can see, is fun.

The subject matter has interesting associations. Pig Lane is close. Apparently the street derives its name from the piggery which used to stand there, an outbuilding of nearby Hardcragg Hall. A plaque referring to the Hall briefly tells its history and informs the passing reader that Beatrix Potter became a regular visitor to the Hall. There she 'met' a friendly 'porker' who later became Pigling Bland, a character in one of her successful story books. That assured him of longer lasting fame, I suppose, than those of his kind who have graced the slabs in the excellent local butchers' shops.

All of that said, the pig in the picture reminds me more of Piglet, from the Pooh books of A A Milne.
