But why the embellishment in the corner of the L frame? No-one is going to see it from below as they speed along the M3 and no-one will notice it as they drive past on the flyover road, trying to keep their lane.

Did the designer have some spare metal left and thought I'll add a little personal touch? Or was it part of the design brief - nothing too ornate (= cost) just something prudent to give the allusion of style over function?
